Review :

Gaia Online has just released a new RPG (Role playing game) Monster Galaxy for the social networking site Facebook.
The game is alike to other similar monster-collecting games such as Pokemon and Digimon, and playing the game it is clear to see the inspiration behind it. The objective is in the same vein, collecting monsters, attacking others, completing quests and levelling up.
You start the game as a trainer and one ‘Moga’, ie; one monster and are assigned quests to complete. Quests are typically locations you are to head towards, whilst encounter and battling other trainers and wild Mogas along the way. You are free to capture any wild Mogas as you please, but must keep in mind you can only carry a maximum of three at one time.
Battles are quite straightforward. You have four options, Attack, Items, Switch Moga, or Run. Items that can be used include Star Seeds, which enable you to capture the enemy Moga. This can only be done when the Moga is critically injured, and the success of your attempt depends on a certain variables, such as the damage incurred, your level, and the rarity of the enemy Moga.
The game doesn’t really take advantage of the social aspect, and is seemingly more like a single player RPG. Real life money can be used to purchase “Star coins”, which can in turn be exchange for Star Seeds. Star Seeds aren’t too hard to get a hold of, but it is there just to make it that little bit easier. The multi player features are not too much to rave about. Currently, you can visit your friends’ houses to collect Whistles; these can be used to launch special attacks during battles. However, players will do just fine without.
This is the game summed up in a nutshell. For a Facebook game, most are expected to be kept relatively simple, however, Monster Galaxy has the potential to be much more, and this potential isn’t realised. Multiplayer is disappointing, and there are a few minor lagging and UI issues. However, the game is still relatively new. It can’t be ruled out that any updates to come will fix these problems, as well as introduce new features to the game. As said, the potential is there, now it’s up to Gaia Online to see if it will be fulfilled.
